Aquaculture Stewardship Council gears up to unveil unified global farm standard
The Netherlands-based non-profit said it is working to have the new standard operational in 2025. The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is preparing to launch a new farm standard intended for universal application across species, supplanting the current species-specific standards. Headquartered in Utrecht, Netherlands, the ASC endeavors to have the new standard operational by 2025. “This development means that wherever in the world an ASC-certified farm is located, and whatever its production type, the requirements the farm needs to meet to obtain and retain ASC certification are relevant and consistent,” an ASC spokesperson told Undercurrent News.
The ASC farm standard is underpinned by four core principles: effective farm management, environmental responsibility, social responsibility and fish welfare. These principles aim to ensure adherence to legal and transparent business practices, minimizing adverse impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems, address social responsibility issues encompassing human rights and labor practices, and prioritize fish welfare through enhanced health and handling measures.
