Land-based shrimp farmer eyes $4.5m raise as it scales modular “shrimpbox” system for New York City market.
Atarraya, a land-based shrimp farming venture that originated in Mexico, is planning to build an operation featuring 200 self-contained “shrimpboxes” at a new site in the Northeastern US, reports AgFunder News.
The company was shifting its business strategy to focus on domestic production after previously outlining plans to license the technology overseas, as reported by Undercurrent. It established its first US site in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Founder and CEO Daniel Russek said the company aims to expand to 100 tanks in Indianapolis and 200 tanks at the Northeast facility, targeting the New York market.
Production from the first 100 planned tanks has already been sold, he added.
The company has raised around $18 million to date and is seeking an additional $4.5m to support expansion, of which $3.2m is already secured.
